Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele lead the US Presidents Cup team after automatic qualification ends

The Presidents Cup teams are halfway finished.

The automatic qualifying period for the Presidents Cup ended for the U.S. and international teams on Sunday afternoon after the BMW Championship. Just like in the Ryder Cup, the top six golfers from each side in the FedEx Cup standings or the Official World Golf Ranking received automatic qualification for their teams. When the Tour Championship concludes next weekend, the two team captains will select their six players to complete the 12-man teams.

Scottie Scheffler led on the U.S. side based on FedEx Cup points. Scheffler won six times on tour this season and won a gold medal at the Olympics earlier this month. He will start the Tour Championship at 10 under par with a two-shot lead. Xander Schauffele finished second for the United States. He won both the PGA Championship and the British Open this season, doubling his total number of career major championship wins.

Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark, Patrick Cantlay and Sahith Theegala won the last four automatic spots for the United States.

Hideki Matsuyama was the international team’s lead qualifier. Matsuyama, who withdrew from the BMW Championship due to a back injury, won twice on tour this season – including the FedEx St. Jude Championship earlier in the playoffs. South Korean golfers Tom Kim, Sungjae Im and Ben An also secured spots, as did Australians Jason Day and Adam Scott.

Team captains Jim Furyk and Mike Weir will officially announce their captaincy selection on September 3rd.

The Presidents Cup begins on September 26 at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Quebec, Canada. The biennial competition between American golfers and international golfers from outside Europe runs parallel to the Ryder Cup. The US team has won the last nine events and has an overall record of 12-1-1, with its only loss coming in 1998.
