Organized crime in Chicago during Prohibition. The Thornton Historical Society will host a program by John Binder entitled “Organized Crime in Chicago During Prohibition” at 7 p.m. at the museum, 114 N. Hunter Street in Thornton. Binder is a retired university professor who has researched organized crime in Chicago for over 30 years. He is the author of “Al Capone’s Beer Wars” andThe Chicago Outfit.”

Wednesday, August 28

Street festival in Homewood. The last village festival of the season will take place from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Martin Square. The music will be provided by Calvin Buado, the official DJ of the Chicago Blackhawks.

Sunday, September 1st

Drop Dead Comedy Night. The improvisation group South of Chi performs from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Thornton Distilling, 400 E. Margaret St., Thornton.

The Village of Homewood Treeshare Program will return in the spring after a cicada-related hiatus. Residents can purchase two trees each on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of the Village Hall, 2020 Chestnut Road. Tree species, costs and care instructions are available on the village website.

Homewood Civic Academy. The registration deadline for the fall Citizens Civics Academy is September 3. Sessions will be held Monday evenings from 6-8 p.m. September 23 through October 28. Click here to register.
