Expert tips: How to remove self-tanning stains from bed sheets

An expert has revealed a simple method to remove self-tanner from sheets.

Many of us now know that the safest way to tan is to use bottled tanning creams. Even skin that isn’t peeling or showing signs of sunburn can be damaged if it turns darker than its natural color when exposed to the sun.

The Skin Cancer Foundation stated: “Although tanning is often associated with good health, it is the exact opposite of health. It is evidence of DNA damage to your skin. Tanning damages your skin cells and accelerates visible signs of aging. And worst of all, tanning can lead to skin cancer.”

Given these findings, it’s no surprise that many people prefer artificial tanning to natural tanning. Although there are products on the market today that offer a seamless tan, they can still leave stubborn stains on clothes and bedsheets.

There is a lot of discussion on TikTok about tan stained bedsheets. There are now more than 49.7 million posts on the topic, with users sharing tips on how to get rid of these pesky stains. Furniture company Wayfair sought advice on the topic from cleaning expert Ann Russell, who has 2.6 million followers on TikTok.

Her recommendation was clear: “I find that oxygen bleach in any form works wonders. Also, if you have white bed linen, a dose of Ariel before washing with Ace Green or peroxide and a long cotton wash cycle at 60°C can make the bed linen sparkling white again.”

Lynsey Crombie, also known as the “Queen of Clean”, has found a solution to the problem of self-tanning bed linen. She recommends spraying the sheets with white vinegar before washing to get rid of stubborn stains and recommends a pre-wash cycle for particularly dirty laundry.

On TikTok, people are sharing ideas on how to avoid stains on bed sheets altogether. Vicky Gilchrist shared her own tricks for sleeping in an old duvet cover to avoid tan stains.

However, not everyone is convinced that these tricks would work for them. One skeptical user confessed: “No, because I would wake up doubled over and panicking!” Another joked: “I would forget and probably break my neck on the toilet in the middle of the night.”

Some TikTok users recommended applying talcum powder to prevent the fake tan from rubbing off on the sheets. One of the users joined the online conversation and advised: “Just let it dry for about an hour and then apply talcum powder.”

This suggestion has been supported by many others. According to the advice of tanning experts, dusting talcum powder on sweat-prone areas such as underarms, inner elbows and behind the knees can help prevent streaks from forming during the tanning process.
