Farewell, WCBS 880: One of NYC’s last pure news stations goes on the air after nearly 60 years

After nearly 60 years, WCBS 880 AM will be shut down at midnight today, leaving listeners with 1010 WINS as the only pure news station in the tri-state area, according to several media reports.

Earlier this month, NJ.com reported that Audacy, the station’s owner, announced it would drop the all-news format and call letters and relaunch the station as WHSQ-AM, ESPN New York, on Monday, August 26.

Chris Oliviero, Audacy’s New York market president, said it was a difficult decision but one that reflected the changing behavior of modern media consumers.

The company will put its investment into 1010 WINS, its station that has been bringing news to listeners for 70 years, which will begin simulcasting on 92.3 FM in 2022.

“New York has always been proud to support two pure-play news radio brands, but the news business has undergone significant change,” Oliviero said in a statement. “The headwinds facing local journalism across the country have made it necessary to strategically rethink how we deliver the news to have the greatest impact.”

“WCBS 880 is one of the most respected radio stations in history, with a legacy built by the hundreds of world-class journalists on and off the air who have brought it to life over the decades,” he added.

According to Audacy, the company will remain the exclusive rights holder and radio home of the Mets baseball team.
