Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 – Darcie Brown fit for World Cup as Australia prepare to ‘unleash’ pace duo

Darcie Brown has recovered from a stress fracture in her foot and now takes her place in Australia’s 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup, which has been moved from Bangladesh to the United Arab Emirates.
Jess Jonassen, who did not take part in the tour of Bangladesh earlier this year, will miss a World Cup for the first time in which she was eligible for selection.

The squad is well-rehearsed at 15 players led by Alyssa Healy and represents the combination expected as Australia seeks its fourth consecutive T20 title.

Brown will be joined by Tayla Vlaeminck, who will provide Australia with extra pace from two bowlers. Phoebe Litchfield will be playing in her first World Cup.

“This is the first time in a long time that we have had our entire contract list available for selection before a World Cup and this has resulted in a really stable and balanced squad,” said national team coach Shawn Flegler.

“This is Alyssa’s first time taking the reins at a World Championship and we’ve already seen the leadership qualities she and Tahlia bring, so it’s exciting for her to have this opportunity to lead her country on the biggest stage.

“Pheobe is a real X-factor for us and will be well supported by an experienced group in her first World Cup. We have wanted to unleash the pace duo Tayla and Darcie for some time and it is a real unique selling point for us.”

Jonassen, who has played a key role in Australia’s teams over the past decade, had the door open to work her way back into the team over the course of the season, which includes an Ashes series.

“Jess Jonassen is unlucky again not to be there, but we are impressed with how she has come back and we will continue to monitor her form ahead of the home game in the summer,” said Flegler.

The World Cup-nominated squad will also play the three T20Is against New Zealand next month, with the addition of all-rounder Heather Graham, who will not travel to the UAE.
