Solheim Cup 2024: Who has qualified for Team Europe and who will Suzann Pettersen nominate as captain candidate? | Golf News
Georgia Hall must be selected as captain to compete in the Solheim Cup for the fifth consecutive year after narrowly missing out on qualifying for this year’s competition with her result at the AIG Women’s Open.
The Solheim Cup qualifying campaign ended with the final major of the year, and Hall started the week outside the automatic places after finishing in the top 10 worldwide just once this year.
Due to Madelene Sagstrom’s missed cut on the Old Course, Hall now has the chance to overtake the Swede as one of the six qualifiers in the world rankings with a top-20 result, but she was eliminated from the race on Saturday with a 76 in the third round.
Hall responded with a one-under-par score of 71 on the final day to finish tied for 22nd, nine strokes behind champion Lydia Ko. The Englishwoman will now hope to be selected as captain when Suzann Pettersen announces her four favourites live on Sky Sports Golf on Monday afternoon.
“Overall a little disappointed,” Hall to Sky Sports. “I had three really solid rounds. I’m very happy with my game. Even yesterday (third round) I played pretty well. I just missed a couple of short putts and messed up two shots on 17, which cost me the win this week.”
Hall was an automatic qualifier for Europe’s last four Solheim Cup teams, so the former AIG Women’s Open winner is an obvious choice for Pettersen for next month’s competition.
“Obviously I love being part of the team,” added Hall. “I’ve played in a few. Obviously it was a fantastic honour to win the last three and be part of that. I love playing match play.”
“I think I’ve had some good results trying to make my point and I know a lot of the girls. I think I play pretty decently so yeah, I’ll keep my fingers crossed (that I get selected).”
Charley Hull topped the European Solheim Cup points list ahead of Germany’s Esther Henseleit, who will make her debut for Team Europe, while all six qualifiers from the world rankings were involved in last year’s dramatic 14-14 draw with Team USA in Spain.
Celine Boutier, Maja Stark, Linn Grant and Leona Maguire all return for Team Europe, while Sagstrom secures the final automatic spot ahead of Hall and makes his fourth Solheim Cup appearance.
Who else could Pettersen select for Team Europe?
Anna Nordqvist has played in the last eight Solheim Cup picks and would add additional experience to an already strong team, while Emily Kristine Pedersen And Gemma Dryburgh were both part of last year’s draw in Spain.
Bronte Law came into the AIG Women’s Open as the leader of the Ladies European Tour, but missed the cut, while Alexander Forsterling won four times last year and is a possible contender for a Solheim Cup debut.
Albane Valenzuelawho was born in America to a Mexican father and French mother but has qualified for Team Europe since moving to Switzerland as a child, is another option after proving her consistent performance over the summer with a shared 20th place finish at St Andrews.
Sweden’s Linnea Strom is the only European player to win on the LPGA Tour this season, while Nanna Koerstz Madsen – part of the winning team on American soil in 2021 – impressed with a top-10 finish at the Women’s Open.
Watch Suzann Pettersen announce her captain’s choice for the Solheim Cup live on Sky Sports News from 4pm on Monday, before the European team attempts to defend the trophy when they take on the United States team from September 13-15.
