Alabama high school football player dies after ‘medical emergency’

This week, tragedy struck the New Brockton, Alabama, high school community. According to numerous reports, Semaj Wilkins, a 14-year-old freshman football player, collapsed during practice on Tuesday and later died.

The incident reportedly occurred as Wilkins and his teammates were warming up before practice. At around 4:30 p.m., Wilkins suffered what was described as a “medical emergency” during warm-ups and was given CPR on the field. Minutes later, emergency responders arrived and continued treatment before transporting the young athlete to nearby Enterprise Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

“This was a huge blow to this small community,” Coffee County Coroner Arnold Woodham told Today.com. “I’ve lived here my whole life and this is the first time I’ve ever seen or heard of anything like this happening here.”

Coffee County Schools Superintendent Kelly Cobb issued a statement about Wilkins on Facebook.

“Semaj was a young man who brought joy and inspiration to his peers, teammates, coaches and faculty members,” Cobb wrote. “His loss is deeply regretted by all who knew him.”

The cause of death is currently unknown and the body will be subjected to an autopsy at the Alabama Department of Forensics. The results of this examination may not be available for several weeks.

In addition, the Coffee County Sheriff’s Department is conducting an investigation into the death, which occurred on a day when temperatures in the area reached 95 degrees Fahrenheit and the heat index was 38.

New Brockton was scheduled to face Barbour County on Friday night, but instead the high school community will gather at the team’s stadium to remember Wilkins. The team’s status for its regular season opener on Aug. 23 against Pike Liberal Arts is unknown.
