Bond girl felt “extremely intimidated” on the 007 set: “Was terrified to go to work” | Movies | Entertainment

It’s been 25 years since Denise Richards played her Bond girl Dr. Christmas Jones in The World Is Not Enough, now streaming on ITVX.

The 1999 blockbuster was Pierce Brosnan’s third of four appearances as James Bond 007, and his co-star admitted to having had serious problems before, during and after production.

In a previous conversation with SpyHard’s podcast, Richards said these difficult feelings began during her test shoot as a Bond girl alongside Brosnan himself.

The 53-year-old was so grateful to have made it this far in the auditions and recalled: “I met him for the first time at a rehearsal.

“It’s very daunting and intimidating. As an actress, it’s scary. I was so nervous, I was so scared.”

What helped her, however, was how approachable she found the Bond star. She said: “Oh, he’s a great guy, he’s so nice, so sweet… Pierce is a bit clumsy, I thought… he’s really funny and very, very lovable and engaging and just super down to earth. He was lovely.” But when she arrived on set, the “Christmas Jones” star faced more challenges.

Richards said: “Surprisingly, we didn’t rehearse much before we started shooting. So I was extremely intimidated because I was also working with Sophie Marceau, a beautiful French actress who has made films that were very different from mine. So there were times when I didn’t feel worthy because I was working with (director) Michael Apted and Pierce Brosnan and Sophie Marceau. Sometimes I was afraid to go to work.”

Still, there was one actor in the film that the thought of working with kept her awake all night.

Richards admitted: “On my first day on set, I think I only had one line and I was up all night and couldn’t sleep because it was with Judi Dench. And I was terrified. She couldn’t have been nicer, but I was so scared I was going to mess up my one line that I had to say that day that it was my first day of filming! I didn’t want to mess it up.”

While promoting The World Is Not Enough, the Bond girl was criticised for portraying her scientist in a tank top and shorts. She admitted that she would go back to her hotel room and cry before putting on a smile at press conferences and premieres.

Still, she added: “Despite all of that, I’m so grateful and proud to have been part of such an iconic franchise. It’s something you never forget.”
