A four-year-old New Jersey girl is on the road to recovery after being stabbed multiple times in an attack this week.

Police found the young child with numerous stab wounds in a home on 10th Avenue in Paterson after 4 p.m. local time on Friday, August 23, the Passaic County District Attorney’s Office said, according to CBS News, ABC 7 New York and NBC New York.

The victim, whose identity was not disclosed, was seriously injured by stab wounds to the forehead and was taken to Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center, where she remains in stable condition, media reported.

The incident reportedly occurred during an argument between family members at the residence, media sources said. It is unclear what sparked the argument.

The police have not yet confirmed any suspects and the investigation is ongoing.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing the girl’s mother carrying her out of the house covered in blood, crying hysterically after the incident.

“All we saw was the woman, the mother, holding her daughter, running out of the house hysterically with blood everywhere,” a neighbor told CBS News.

“But the paramedics got here on time and did what they had to do. So just pray to God that the little girl is OK, that she makes it and that everything is OK, because the whole city is praying for her,” they added.

The Passaic County District Attorney’s Office and Paterson County Police did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Sunday, August 25.
