WTC points table 2024: Pakistan sinks to the bottom after defeat to Bangladesh | Pragativadi

Rawalpindi: Pakistan suffered a humiliating defeat to Bangladesh in the first of two Test matches of the series in Rawalpindi on Sunday.

After a grueling fourth day, with Pakistan finishing 23-1 and still trailing by 94 runs, a draw was on the cards.

However, Bangladesh had other plans and restricted Pakistan to just 146 in the second innings and thanks to a solid lead of 117 in the first innings, a target of 30 was all the Bangla Tigers could achieve and create history. The Bangladesh openers did their job and recorded a 10-wicket win away from home.

This is Bangladesh’s first Test win against Pakistan. While it is a day of celebration for Bangladesh, it is the exact opposite for the Pakistani team. The defeat has extended Pakistan’s losing streak to 1294 days. They have not won a Test at home during the said period. Another bad news for Pakistan is their updated position in the World Test Championship rankings.

According to the new update, Pakistan has slipped to 8th place in the rankings. After 6 matches, Pakistan has only won two matches while losing four and is struggling with 22 points in the rankings. Moreover, Bangladesh, who made history by beating Pakistan, has reached 6th place.

With six wins in nine matches, Team India is at the top of the table and has outperformed all other teams with a superior percentage of 62.52. Australia is in second place. They have eight wins and one draw in 12 matches. At the moment, it is a neck and neck race for a place in the WTC final, which is likely to take place in June 2025. So, there is still a considerable amount of time left and more contenders could emerge.
