The Alabama teenager who lost a hand and a leg in a shark attack in Florida has finally returned home – and presented her new prosthetics to a parade of her supporters.

Fifteen-year-old Lulu Gribbin was on a mother-daughter swimming trip in Walton Beach on June 7 when she was attacked by a shark.

The shark had bitten off Gribbins’ left hand and doctors had to amputate her right leg from the knee to the hip. Her friend McCray Faust, 17, also suffered injuries to her foot.

After an 11-week stay at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola and Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina, the teenager finally returned home to Mountain Brook, Alabama on Friday.

Gribbin was greeted by a parade of people dressed entirely in purple, her favorite color, and rode in the back of a golf cart, waving to the crowd with her prosthetic arm.

“We are incredibly grateful to have our family back under one roof for the first time in 77 days. We look forward to the next chapter of our family and what Lulu will accomplish,” her mother, Ann Blair Gribbin, said in an update from CaringBridge.

Supporters who attended the parade said they came to show Gribbin how strong and what an inspiration she is.

“I just thought how inspiring she is to keep going because I don’t know if I could do what she did,” seventh-grader Kennedy Romeo told WVTM. “It’s been incredible to watch her recovery.”

“I’m here to support her,” said Leslie Higgins. “She’s a very strong personality and if that were me, I would freak out. I want to tell her, ‘You’re a strong personality, you’re a strong woman. Keep going.'”

The teenager has been documenting her recovery on Instagram, sharing photos and videos as she learns to live with her new prosthetics.

Gribbin has tried disability sports such as basketball, soccer and cycling. She was even able to participate in a doctor-led therapeutic field trip where she was able to attend an NFL preseason game between the Jets and Panthers.

The brutal attack on the teenager occurred around 3 p.m. on that fateful day, when Gribbin and her friends were swimming near a sandbank.

A crowd formed at the edge of the sea, which had been evacuated by Walton County authorities and lifeguards, when Gribbins’ twin sister, Ellie, came to her mother and told her that Gribbins had been attacked.

“I saw the wounds on her leg and started screaming. She was lifeless, her eyes were closed, her mouth was white and pale. The wound on her leg or whatever was left of her leg was like something out of a movie,” the mother said.

Two men managed to pull Gribbins’ body from the water and several medical professionals rushed from the beach to assist.

She was then flown by helicopter to a trauma center in Pensacola in critical condition.

Just six kilometers away, 45-year-old Elisabeth Foley from Virginia was bitten by a shark at around 1:15 p.m. on the same day.

She suffered significant injuries to her abdomen and pelvis, and her forearm had to be amputated.

Alabama Senator Katie Britt has proposed a bill called “Lulu’s Law” in honor of the teens that would allow emergency telephone alerts in the event of shark attacks.
