Triathlete dies after competition in Nottinghamshire Park

A triathlete has died after taking part in a race in a park in Nottinghamshire.

Nottinghamshire Police said a man suffered a medical emergency while attending an event at Holme Pierrepont Country Park, near Colwick, on Saturday afternoon.

A police spokesman said: “Sadly, the man later passed away and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.”

Police said the death is not being treated as suspicious at this time and the man’s next of kin have been informed.

In a statement posted on social media, the Tri Society said it was “deeply saddened” by the athlete’s death.

It was said the man was taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham by medical staff at the event.

The statement said: “Our thoughts are with the athlete’s family, friends and teammates during this difficult time.”

The park, which is home to the National Water Sports Centre, hosted the Triathlon England National Club Relays Championships on Saturday.

The organizer British Triathlon confirmed the athlete’s participation and expressed its condolences to the man’s friends and family.

Fellow triathletes and clubs also expressed their condolences on social media.

Police said a file was being prepared for the coroner.
