Delaware State football team misses flight to Hawaii for Week 0 game

Just days before their season opener against Hawaii, the Delaware State Hornets missed their Tuesday flight to Honolulu.

ESPN 1420’s Gary Terp first reported the news, which was later confirmed by Delaware State to the Star-Advertiser’s Stephen Tsai. The 10.5-hour flight from Dover to Honolulu was delayed due to a “bus issue,” Tsai reported.

Within an hour, Brandon Marcello of CBS Sports and 247Sports on X reported that Delaware State had rebooked its trip and, according to a university spokeswoman, “will still arrive in Hawaii on time tomorrow.”

The game will take place on Saturday, August 24th at 5:59 p.m. local time, or 11:59 p.m. ET, at the Clarence TC Ching Complex. The Hornets enter the game as underdogs after finishing 1-10 last season and have not won more than five games since the 2012 season when they went 6-5 overall and 5-3 in the conference.

While the play hasn’t always looked the best, the Rainbow Warriors are looking to improve after finishing last season 5-8 and with a conference record of 3-5. They won four of their home games last season. Delaware State will be the team’s first HBCU opponent since Prairie View A&M in 1979.

Although the Hornets were ranked last in the MEAC this season, there are three players to watch for Saturday’s game. Tight end Eric Core, who was selected to the all-conference second team in the preseason, finished last season with 424 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

Defensive linemen Darren Cook and Eric Montes, both named to the All-Conference second team for defense in the preseason, will also play important roles. Cook, 6-foot-3, 300 pounds, had 36 tackles last season, including 21 solo and 15 assisted. Montes, 6-foot-1, 230 pounds, recorded 49 tackles, including 29 solo and 20 assisted.

Following the business trip to Honolulu, the Hornets will travel to Fairfield, Connecticut, to face Sacred Heart on August 31st, then return to Delaware to host Wagner on September 14th.
