The 2024 Leagues Cup final is a repeat of the 2023 MLS Cup.

Reigning MLS champions Columbus Crew host Los Angeles FC at Lower.com Field in another high-profile clash between these two clubs.

It’s no surprise that these two teams are in the Leagues Cup final. Before the tournament, the Crew and LAFC were considered Major League Soccer’s best chances to win the Leagues Cup.

Los Angeles FC enters the match having run aground on its opponents in the knockout rounds. LAFC has won its four knockout round matches by an aggregate score of 13-1 and easily swept the Colorado Rapids 4-0 in Wednesday’s semifinals.

However, the Columbus Crew seems to have seen through LAFC. In addition to winning last season’s MLS Cup, the Crew embarrassed LAFC 5-1 at BMO Stadium on July 15. It is LAFC’s only home loss in 2024. The Crew – who have lost only once at home – easily beat Philadelphia Union in the Leagues Cup semifinals.

With their semifinal victories, both the Crew and LAFC qualified for next year’s Concacaf Champions Cup.

What is the Leagues Cup?

North America’s two major professional soccer leagues are pausing their respective regular season competitions for a month to compete in a World Cup-style tournament.

The Leagues Cup was formerly an eight-team tournament, but became a 47-team competition in 2023, involving all clubs from Major League Soccer and Liga MX. Inter Miami CF, led by Lionel Messi, won the first edition of the expanded competition.

Before the first tournament last year featured 47 teams, including all clubs from MLS and Liga MX, the Leagues Cup had already been held twice (2019 and 2021) with a limited number of participants.

The 29 MLS and 18 Liga MX clubs were divided into 15 groups in two regions: East and West. The group stage began on July 26 and lasted until August 6. The top two teams from each group advanced to the knockout round, which began on August 7. The final will be held on August 25.
