Former Pacers guard will officially continue his playing career abroad

A former Indiana Pacers guard will reportedly continue his basketball career overseas. Four years after his last game with the team, 28-year-old Edmond Sumner has agreed to a contract with China’s Sichuan Blue Whales. This news comes from Misko Raznatovic of BeoBasket.

Sumner most recently played for Žalgiris Kaunas of the Lithuanian Basketball League from 2023-2024. In 23 games, he averaged 6.9 points, 1.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists. Sumner will join the team alongside former NBA star Greg Monroe and his former Pacers teammate Kyle O’Quinn.

Sumner played for the Pacers from 2018 to 2021. His career with the team started slowly, appearing in 55 games over three seasons. During that time, he averaged 4 points, 1.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists. However, the Michigan native played a more prominent role in the 2020-21 season.

In his final season with the team, Sumner appeared in 53 games for the Pacers during the 2020–21 season. On the year, he averaged 7.5 points and 1.8 rebounds per game, shooting 52.5% from the field and 39.8% from beyond the three-point line. Sumner also started 24 games with the team, by far his highest total as a Pacers guard.

On the two consecutive nights, Sumner scored 22 and 21 points, respectively, against the Detroit Pistons and Orlando Magic.

Before the 2021-22 season, Sumner suffered an Achilles tendon injury that kept him out of action for the entire year. In September 2021, the Pacers traded him to the Brooklyn Nets for Juan Pablo Vaulet.

Sumner spent the 2022–23 season with the Nets, appearing in 53 games for them, but was waived by the team in the offseason. Sumner would later sign with the Charlotte Hornets, but the team waived him before he could suit up for them.

Sumner has been out of the league for over a year and his latest move will keep him overseas for the foreseeable future. It’s unclear if the Xavier alumnus has any interest in returning to the NBA. Regardless, it doesn’t seem to be on the cards. At least for now.
