Brayden Schager leads Hawaii’s football team to week zero victory over Delaware State

In week zero, the Saturday games on the island of Oahu ended with a clear 35:14 victory for the Hawaii Warriors against the Delaware State Hornets.

Despite the strong winds of Tropical Storm Hone, UH quarterback Brayden Schager was the driving force behind the win, scoring four total touchdowns – two through the air and two on the ground. The Dallas native also completed 17 of 34 passes for 203 yards in the game.

Schager threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Tamatoa Mokiao-Atimalala in the first quarter to open the scoring. At the end of the first quarter, Tylan Hines scored a 40-yard punt return for a touchdown. Hines’ return was Hawaii’s first punt return touchdown since 2012.

Marqui Adams put the Hornets on the scoreboard with a 10-yard touchdown run to cap a 77-yard drive. Hawaii only led 14-7 at halftime.

In the second half, Delaware State opened the period with another long touchdown drive, making an upset seem possible at 14-14, but the Hornets did not reach the end zone again.

Schager, on the other hand, led three more touchdown drives for Hawaii to decide the game, including one that ended with a 29-yard pass to Dekel Crowdus.

Hawaii’s 2024 schedule continues on Saturday, August 31 at 7:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. PT on CBS when UH hosts Big Ten newcomer UCLA.
