The natural world continues to thrive despite bombardment

UFC Vegas 96: UFC Apex; Las Vegas, Nevada

At the end of the day, everyone has to prove their worth. And right now, Caio Borralho is on a roll. The 31-year-old Brazilian is proving he’s more than just a ground fighter. His hand speed is impressive and he can hang with the best. As he climbs the rankings, The Natural continues to thrive under pressure in a tough division.

He clearly raised the level of his opponent, fifth-ranked Jared Cannonier. For The Killa Gorilla, it was a big risk but a small reward. But that’s what solid fighters are made of. Sometimes you just have to bet on yourself. And indeed, he gave Borralho the biggest test of his career.

The fight was even until the fifth round. The championship rounds are something Borralho has never been. When Cannonier let go of his hands and was on his toes, he was somewhat successful. He gave Borralho a nasty cut under the right eye in round four. And he had a solid hook. The final nail in the coffin, however, was a vicious combo that put Cannonier under pressure and took him to the floor. Borralho followed with ground and pound and also tried to hit a triangle.

But make no mistake, Cannonier’s game plan changed early in the fight when Borralho completely dismembered Cannonier’s left leg. The unanimous decision victory 49-45 2x, 48-46 was the highlight of his career so far.

The natural thrives under light for the first time… Was it a wise use?

A call to the champion. Of course he wants a title fight. But that’s not going to happen at the moment. Dricus Du Plessis has more important things to do. Moreover, despite his talent, Borralho has weaknesses that the champion will clearly expose.

He’s been hit a few times, so it would be nice if his defense was a little better. And yes, he’s fast. But the champion is faster. But there are two options for him. First, he could take out the struggling Marvin Vettori. Or he can wait due to the eye injury and face the winner of Nassourdine Imavov – Brendan Allen. Allen has the takedown defense and speed that would provide Borralho with the next big challenge. And he could also keep up with Borralho on the ground. Allen has a strong chin, but to say it could withstand the onslaught coming his way might be an exaggeration. With Borralho’s kicking game, the chin would also open up a little more.
