The Athens Water Supply and Sewerage Company (EYDAP) is activating additional water sources to improve water supply in Attica due to the ongoing drought, EYDAP CEO Haris Sachinis said in an interview with the Athens Macedonian News Agency (AMNA) published on Sunday.

Sachinis added that there is currently no need to take measures to restrict water consumption. He explained that EYDAP expects citizens to save water voluntarily.

However, if it neither rains nor snows in winter, the situation will change. “Then we will enter the red zone. At the moment we are still in the yellow, not even in the orange zone,” he said.

According to Sachinis, water reserves have declined significantly over the past two years due to a lack of rainfall.

In the event that the drought continues in the coming years, the Ministry of Environment and Energy is already working on solutions, such as the development of new reservoirs, the enrichment of groundwater with recycled water or desalination plants.

Sachinis stressed that the population must be cautious and avoid wasting water. He also clarified that there are no plans to increase water bills.
