Once upon a time, a Disney starlet named Miley Cyrus played a pop star named Hannah Montana. But after performing at the MTV VMAs last night, the former good girl was nowhere to be seen.

The singer, whose song “We Don’t Stop” contains drug references, seems to have finally shed her Hannah Montana wig and is an “adult star.” And by “adult star,” we mean a scantily clad, twerking girl who shocked audiences (and TV viewers) with her crotch-grabbing, grinding performance alongside fellow singer Robin Thicke.

So should we have seen the signs of this outstanding performance coming? In a word: probably.

Miley appeared in the Disney television series Hannah Montana from 2006 to 2011, playing the role of Miley Stewart, who also played pop star Hannah Montana (a pseudonym unknown to her fans). This role catapulted Cyrus into the world of teen idols and helped her sell over three million albums on the Hannah Montana show and made her a household name.

As she outgrew the role of Hannah Montana, Cyrus began to push the boundaries of accepted teen idols by adding more revealing elements to her songs, performances, and public image.

In 2008, at the tender age of 15, Cyrus posed for a photo shoot by Annie Leibovitz wrapped only in a bedsheet. At 16, she caused a stir when she performed her hit “Party In The USA” at the Teen Choice Awards, which featured Cyrus dancing on an ice cream truck with a stripper pole.

And so it goes on. In late 2010, the Salvia incident occurred when Cyrus was photographed taking a hit of the “psychedelic herb” from a type of bong.

At her 19th birthday party the following year, the singer was presented with a Bob Marley-themed birthday cake and reportedly told her friends, “You know you’re a stoner when your friends make you a Bob Marley cake. You know you smoke way too much damn weed.” Her camp later refuted her comments, saying Cyrus was a “smart-ass.”

During this time, Cyrus began dating Australian actor Liam Hemsworth. The couple met in 2009 while filming the romantic drama “The One Where You Were Born” and began dating soon after. They initially split in August 2010, but resumed their romance a month later.

The couple confirmed their engagement last year, but their relationship is notoriously volatile in Hollywood, with rumors circulating of breakups, reconciliations and family interference in the relationship.

The final step in Cyrus’ dramatic image transformation came with her signing with new record label RCA in January of this year and the debut of her single “We Don’t Stop.” The song’s lyrics, which referenced drug use (‘Dancing with Molly’, also known as the drug MDMA), forced the singer to admit what she had been up to.

“I don’t think it’s hard for people to understand that I’ve grown up,” Cyrus told the Daily Mail. “You can Google me and know what I’m up to – you know what the lyrics say.”

Add to that a series of revealing photoshoots in skimpy underwear this year, her penchant for going pantsless, and a slew of videos of Cyrus showing off her twerking dance moves, and we now have a good girl who has definitely gone astray.
