Chappell Roan struts through her hometown in the making-of video for “Hot to Go!”

A year ago Chappell Roan marched through Springfield, Missouri, with a new dance worthy of the birthplace of Route 66: the Hot to Go Dance. Now the artist, who grew up nearby, is releasing a behind-the-scenes look at how she got the town dancing in her hit music video for “Hot to Go!”

In the three-and-a-half minute clip, she jokes with locals and backing tracks à la carte. In one shot, she’s asked if she’s “in a band or something,” and in another, she squirts ketchup on a tray of fast food and desperately utters the words “hot to go” with as much enthusiasm as a music video requires. She also tells the camera that her sequined MC outfit is terribly uncomfortable.

The inconvenience was worth it, however, as the song solidified her rise as a Midwestern princess. The fact that she walks around for most of the video without anyone recognizing her speaks volumes about how she became a success practically overnight. The song eventually became a number 17 hit on Billboard Hot 100.

In one scene, she meets with drag artists to teach them the dance. “I’m very lucky that queens and transgender people are part of this,” she said. “It’s such a great honor. Let’s learn this silly dance.”

She also talked about the pressure that comes with growing fame. “Sometimes it’s more stressful when there are more people on set than when you just have a small crew,” she said. “And also, I feel a lot less stressed in my hometown. … I never thought this would be possible because it’s really hard to get everyone on board and come here.”

In the end, however, it is clear that she has succeeded in winning over the people of Springfield who did not know her… just as she has done everywhere else over the past year.
