Students at the West Campus complex say they have no electricity, no water, no air conditioning and no answers

College students at a West Campus apartment complex say they are without power, water or air conditioning and are getting no answers as they try to move in for their fall semester.

“I just climbed 23 flights of stairs because the elevators were broken, I had no running water and when I walked into my room I was surprised that it was 28 degrees,” said resident Grace Pohl.

On Saturday morning, students woke up to high temperatures and were unable to use the restrooms or elevators at the Rise at West campus near the University of Texas at Austin, students report.

“My mother and I called, but they just don’t answer. I heard that the managers aren’t here, but there’s a student working here today and no one’s here, so I guess I’ll have to stay in a hotel tonight,” Pohl said.

“I got an email saying the power was out and our elevators weren’t working. About an hour later, after reading the email, I realized the water wasn’t working,” said resident Zarina Ards.

Ards says she lives on the 17th floor and has electricity but no air conditioning.

“I can use my plug-in fan to circulate the air, but otherwise our air conditioning is broken, so it gets hotter and hotter as the day goes on,” Ards said.

Pohl says she has had to cope with the 27 degrees Celsius in her apartment on the 23rd floor for weeks.

“I didn’t have air conditioning for 10 to 12 weeks all summer. I had no air conditioning, it was 80, 81, 82 degrees in my apartment, and then they put up portables and I had air conditioning for maybe one day,” Pohl said.

This weekend, students will move into the building and prepare to return to school.

“As we were going down the stairs, we saw a large box in the middle of the stairs and we assumed they were pushing the box with their belongings in it up the stairs,” Ards said.

In a statement to FOX 7 Austin, Rise at West Campus said, among other things:

“We had an air conditioning issue today due to a power outage at our West Campus in Austin. The team is working as quickly as possible to resolve the issue. Maintenance will be on site throughout the day.”

“I just want to get out of my lease and find an apartment where I have air conditioning, electricity and water and don’t have to climb 23 flights of stairs,” Pohl said.

According to the apartment complex, alternative accommodations will be offered while the problem is resolved.
