Williams driver Alex Albon was disqualified from qualifying for the Dutch GP

Alex Albon was disqualified from qualifying for the Dutch Grand Prix on Saturday after the dimensions of the floor of his car were deemed to be outside the regulations.

The Williams driver qualified eighth – his best result of the season – but a post-session check by the FIA technical delegate revealed that the volume of the car’s floor did not comply with regulations.

The floor of the car has the potential to generate significant downforce and the volume of the tunnels under the car is strictly controlled by regulations.

As part of a series of improvements to the car, Williams introduced a new floor and diffuser at the Dutch Grand Prix.

The FIA Technical Delegate referred the matter to the stewards of the Dutch Grand Prix, who decided that Albon should be disqualified.

In a statement, Williams said they were “incredibly disappointed with this outcome” and would conduct a “thorough investigation.”

The race stewards’ statement said that the FIA’s measurements had led to a different result than those of the team.

“The floor panel of car 23 was outside the regulated volume specified in Article 3.5.1 a) of the FIA Formula 1 Technical Regulations,” said the race director in a statement.

“The team did not contest the calibration of the FIA measurement system and the measurement of the car, but stated that its own measurements had led to different results.”

“The Race Direction concludes that the result of the measurement carried out with the FIA system in the Parc Fermé is the relevant one and that the proper procedure prescribed in the regulations was followed. Therefore, the standard penalty for such an infringement is imposed.”

Albon’s Williams teammate Logan Sargeant did not take part in qualifying at Zandvoort after a serious accident in the final practice session.
