A physical education teacher and seven others were arrested in connection with the sexual harassment of a 12-year-old student of a private school in Pimpri-Chinchwad in Pune, police said on Saturday.

Following a complaint by the girl’s parents at Nigdi police station, the police arrested the accused on Friday.

The teacher had previously served time in prison for sexual abuse but was reinstated at the school after his release, the official said.

According to the complaint, the teacher had been sexually harassing the girl for the past two years, he said.

“The defendant is said to have touched the girl inappropriately during physical education class and waited for her in front of the ladies’ restroom. He also threatened her several times,” he said.

The survivor had informed her parents after the Nigdi police conducted a workshop on good and bad touch at the school earlier this week.

The accused were booked under sections 74 (assault or use of criminal force with intent to outrage modesty of a woman), 78 (stalking), 79 (word, gesture or act with intent to outrage modesty of a woman), 351 (criminal intimidation) and 115 (intentional causing hurt) and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The official said the other people arrested included the principal and members of the school’s board of trustees and executive board.
