Alabama High School quarterback Caden Tellier dies after injury sustained Friday

Morgan Academy Quarterback Caden Tellier was injured in Friday’s season opener against Southern Academy and had to be flown by helicopter to a local hospital. Tellier was listed in “critical condition” at the time and remained so at 12:00 p.m. ET on Saturday afternoon.

At some point, Michael McLendon of the Alabama Independent School Association released a statement announcing Tellier’s death. The Selma Times Journalwhich has since been edited.

However, Gary Harris of WVUA23 in Tuscaloosa received a message from the Tellier family Saturday evening announcing the death of their son.

“Our boy, Caden Tellier, has come to know Jesus face to face,” Tellier said of Harris. “We appreciate all of your prayers and ask for them as we face the difficult days ahead. Everyone who knows Caden has experienced kindness, generosity and love, and true to his nature, he gives of himself once again.

“His way of life touched many people and his death will save lives. We will walk by his side in his earthly body for the next few days, knowing that his spirit is rejoicing in heaven. Preparations for a service will be made soon.”

Tellier was only 16 years old and in the early stages of his junior year when he suffered a traumatic head injury after a tackle. The game against Southern Academy was over and Morgan Academy emerged victorious 30-22.

However, next week’s game against Wilcox Academy will not take place, according to head coach Dr. Bryan Oliver. All of the school’s sporting events have been canceled for the entire week.

“Last night, our school community experienced a situation most of us have never had to deal with before. In times like these, it is important to support one another and trust in the Lord. There are no words to express the range of emotions you or your family may be experiencing,” Oliver said in a statement about The Selma Times Journal.

We have decided to suspend all school athletic activities, including practices and games, for the next week. We will use this time as a school family to reflect, pray, and process everything that has happened. We plan to return to school on Monday.

We have arranged for several pastors to be on campus to assist students in a variety of ways. If you feel the need to be with your student outside of school, please do so. Monday will look different for us, but our goal will be to provide a place for students to feel safe and loved.

“I will continue to keep you updated on any further changes to our schedule. Please pray for the Tellier family and that God’s overwhelming love will surround them. Everyone at the school is here for your child and your family. Please do not hesitate to reach out to any of us.”
