According to Liquor.com’s findings, the Espresso Martini was the second most popular cocktail in 2023. It’s safe to say that while these drinks have been trending for a while, they’re not going away—and people will be ordering and sipping them well into fall. And yet, with all the fun drinks of the season, we can’t blame you if you’re craving something special to make that martini feel like fall.

For advice on how to best upgrade your cocktail in the coming months, we turned to Camille Wilson, author of Free Spirit Cocktails: 40 Non-Alcoholic Drink Recipes and content creator at The Cocktail Snob. According to Wilson, an espresso martini is the perfect drink to add a pumpkin twist to. “One way to give an espresso martini a fall twist is to add pumpkin spice,” she said. “Plus, adding a spice element like cinnamon, ginger, clove, and nutmeg could really elevate the espresso martini.” Since we know that coffee and pumpkin go together like peanut butter and jelly (as proven by the infamous PSL and Starbucks Reserve’s 2023 Pumpkin Spice Espresso Martini), Wilson’s tip is a delicious yet easy way to combine these flavors at home.

How to make a sweet or spicy espresso martini

To follow Wilson’s advice for a pumpkin spice alcoholic drink, add the ingredients for your espresso martini to a cocktail shaker as you normally would. Then add half a teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice. If you don’t have a shaker with the ready-made mix, you can make the mixture yourself using cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, allspice and black pepper. If you want to add more of any of the spices Wilson suggested, add it to the shaker as well. Cloves will give your drink a sharper flavor, ginger will add a slightly spicy warmth, and cinnamon or nutmeg will give your martini even more of the flavor of a fall dessert.

But don’t worry if you’re not a huge pumpkin fan—there are a few other ways you can give this drink a fall twist. Instead of pumpkin spice, Wilson recommends adding brown sugar or maple syrup. Just like with the spices, you’ll want to pour up to 1 ounce of your syrup of choice into the cocktail shaker instead (depending on how sweet you want your glass), though you can try half an ounce at a time, too. Whichever variation you choose, top off your martini with a healthy helping of (possibly pumpkin) whipped cream, along with some cinnamon or pumpkin spice if you like those flavors.
