There are several NBA stars who weren’t traded this offseason, but the trade deadline is still months away. By then, any number of those players could be wearing a new uniform by the end of 2024-25. All it takes is the right circumstances, and even the seemingly impossible can happen.

Without further ado, here are some of the best candidates to find a new home through a seasonal swap.

Julius Randle

New York Knicks striker Julius Randle’s days in the Big Apple could be numbered.

Right now, fans and analysts are happy with the Nova Knicks concept. A core built on chemistry and defensive strength, the idea is that New York will be able to defend teams with multiple perimeter scoring threats. More specifically, the Knicks are designed to take on the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers.

However, the new additions to the roster could force Randle to play more at center than he has in years past. There’s no doubt that they will lead to a reduction in his touches. However, that’s not ideal for the Knicks or Randle. Between now and the trade deadline, both parties could be looking for deals that take him elsewhere.

Brandon Ingram

To paraphrase the New Orleans Pelicans about Brandon Ingram this offseason: He’s good, but not good enough. That’s why his pleas for a max or near-max contract extension fell on deaf ears. If Pelicans executive vice president David Griffin had heard a trade offer he would accept, the star forward might already be gone.

Ingram, however, is not expected to stay on the roster for long. Not only is he being denied the contract he wants, but there are concerns about whether the offseason changes will dramatically affect his scoring ability. With Ingram frustrated by not getting the ball more often in the 2024 NBA Playoffs, this is a contentious issue.

Shortly before the trade deadline, a rival team that views Ingram as a key player could make an offer for him.

Anfernee Simons

The Portland Trail Blazers could trade Deandre Ayton after signing Donovan Clingan. They could trade Jerami Grant if they believe his trade value is at its highest. However, Anfernee Simons could be their most likely trade candidate.

Unlike Ayton, his salary won’t be an issue because he has a better reputation. He’s five years younger than Grant, making him a more attractive target. When the Blazers drafted Scoot Henderson and Shaedon Sharpe, they were projected to be long-term starters, which put Simons in a precarious position.

The Floridian native could be a particularly good fit for the Los Angeles Lakers and Orlando Magic.

Zach LaVine

Chicago Bulls guard Zach LaVine needs better PR, whether he needs to sign a team or simply get back on the court.

People seem to have lost the plot in discussions about the now underrated high-flyer. Concerns about his durability, defense and ball dominance are valid. However, if it were easy to average 24-4-4 on .475-.385-.838 splits — as LaVine has done over the past six seasons — more players would have done it.

That doesn’t mean a team has to be willing to pay him the $138 million he’s due over the next three seasons. However, the new TV deals will result in salaries that make his contract seem far more reasonable. A team willing to peel back the layers could lock in him, with the Atlanta Hawks being a potential destination.
