Why add two more goalkeepers?

In recent weeks, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, AHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, re-signed goaltender Parker Gahagen and signed former Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Keith Petruzzelli to an AHL contract.

With Gahagen, Petruzzelli and Cal Petersen, the Phantoms have more options in goal than they can handle at once.

These signings have raised further questions about the status of the Flyers’ top prospect, Alexei Kolosov, who was recently added to the Flyers’ training camp roster but also changed agents as the organization eagerly awaits his arrival ahead of training camp in September.

The problem, of course, is that Flyers general manager Danny Briere and management are still trying to determine whether Kolosov plans to return to North America from his native Belarus.

It is safe to assume that Petersen and one of Gahagen and Petruzzelli will remain with the Phantoms, leaving one goalie to join Vinnie Purpura in the ECHL with the Reading Royals as part of their goaltending platoon.

Even without Kolosov, the Flyers have two goalies for each level of the organization, as Sam Ersson and Ivan Fedotov are projected to hold down the fort at the NHL level.

And speaking of the NHL goalie’s performance, that’s a big reason why the general public and reputable betting sites like BetMGM are betting less on the Flyers this year.

On the surface, the Flyers are at least prepared in the event that Kolosov does not return; that much is certain. What the organization plans to do with the other goalies if or when Kolosov returns is currently unclear.

It is also worth noting that Petruzzelli played his best professional hockey at the ECHL level.

On the other hand, Gahagen went 10-4-0 with a .936 save percentage and one shutout with Reading last season, so this level of competition is a bit low for the former Army goalie. At the AHL level, the 31-year-old went 7-8-3 with a solid .914 save percentage last season.
