Loretta Lynn’s granddaughter Lynn Massey dies after ‘health battle’

Loretta Lynn’s eldest granddaughter, Lynn Massey, has died.

On Saturday, August 24, the late country music legend’s official Instagram and Facebook accounts shared the news of Massey’s death, along with a photo showing Massey smiling in front of some of her grandmother’s records. Massey was one of Loretta Lynn’s 26 grandchildren.

“Betty Sue’s daughter Lynn Massey, Loretta’s first grandchild, passed away this week after a long and difficult health battle,” the Lynn family said in a statement. “Our family is so grateful for the prayers and love that continues to be shown to us.”

Several fans and friends expressed their condolences in the comments section of the post on Instagram, including singer Jewel, who wrote: “Sending so much love.”

Although Massey’s age was not disclosed in the post, several media outlets, including AL.com, reported that she was 64 years old.

Massey was the daughter of Betty Sue Lynn, the musician’s first child, who died in 2013 at age 64, according to Taste of Country. According to Betty Sue’s 2013 obituary, she was also the mother of daughter Audrey Dyer – Massey’s sister.

Loretta Lynn had her first child in 1948 when she was 16 years old. The country icon had six children with her husband Oliver “Doolittle” Lynn, whom she married at the age of 15. She was the mother of Clara Marie, Ernest Ray and twins Peggy Jean and Patsy Eileen, as well as Betty Sue and the late Jack Benny.

Loretta Lynn died in October 2022 at the age of 90 in her home in Tennessee.

The singer of “I’m a Honky Tonk Girl”’s other grandchildren include Emmy Russell, a American Idol Candidate who made it to the Hollywood round of the series in early 2024.

In her TV debut in February, Russell sang her own song “Skinny,” which is about weight issues and eating disorders, in front of judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan. In a later appearance on the show, she also sang her grandmother’s hit “Coal Miner’s Daughter.”

“She’s one of the greatest country singers of all time, but to me she’s just grandma,” Russell said at the time. “I think I’m a little shy, and I think it’s because I want to own my voice. That’s why I want to challenge myself and come here.”
