Morgan Academy Student-Athlet Caden Tellier died overnight from complications from a severe brain injury sustained during a football game against Southern Academy in Selma. Tellier was injured in the third quarter of the game, resulting in a brief stoppage while he received treatment on the field.

Tellier, a junior quarterback at Morgan Academy, was treated at the scene before being taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital. Due to the severity of his condition, he required further medical treatment and was subsequently transported by helicopter to a hospital in Birmingham.

“At AISA, we are a close-knit school family and it is with heavy hearts that we extend our deepest condolences and prayers to Caden’s family, friends and the entire Morgan Academy community,” Michael McLendon, executive director of the Alabama Independent School Association, said in a statement. “This loss is unimaginable and we stand with them in their grief.”

McLendon confirmed Morgan Academy’s decision to suspend all school activities for the next week while expressing his sincere regret about the situation. This decision was made to give the neighborhood time to grieve and support one another during this difficult time.

Michael McLendon posted a message on the organization’s Facebook page early Saturday. The initial announcement stated that Tellier had died; however, this was changed to say Tellier suffered a “tragic injury” and was suffering from severe brain damage. In his revised statement, McLendon noted, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic injury of Morgan Academy football player Caden Tellier. Caden is hospitalized in critical condition with a brain injury.” However, the Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) and several other sources later confirmed the tragic death of Caden Tellier after he succumbed to his injury mentioned in previous updates.

Although the exact details of Tellier’s injuries were not immediately clear, the Morgan Academy community and the larger AISA family were very concerned. McLendon asked everyone in Alabama to join in praying and supporting Tellier’s family and the Morgan Academy community during this difficult time.
