Albon to start from the pit lane after disqualification for illegal ground contact

Alex Albon will start the Dutch GP from the pit lane after his Williams was disqualified from qualifying due to a ground rules violation..

The FIA found that the revised floor of the FW46 was too wide after Albon did a great job and qualified eighth.

The team insisted that the car was legal according to its own measurements.

However, the FIA figures are crucial and after checking the system calibration, the race stewards came to the conclusion that the car did indeed not comply with the rules.

They found that “While the team did not deny the calibration of the FIA measurement system and the measurement of the car, it stated that its own measurements had led to different results.

“The Race Direction concludes that the result of the measurement carried out with the FIA system in the Parc Fermé is the relevant one and that the proper procedure prescribed in the regulations was followed. Therefore, the standard penalty for such an infringement is imposed.”

Provided the team can get the car registered overnight, Albon will be allowed to start the race, but as this is by definition a specification change, he will have to do so from the pit lane.

Logan Sargeant did not take part in qualifying after his crash in FP3 and therefore did not fall under the parc fermé rules.

Provided the team can provide him with legal parts, he should be able to start at 19.th Place on the starting grid without having set a time.

The Williams team found: “We are incredibly disappointed with this outcome and will conduct a thorough investigation and provide an update shortly.”

Before the topic came up, Albon said he was happy with the upgrade package.

“We were good here, we were strong here last year, so I don’t think it’s necessarily that big a surprise,” he said.

“But at the same time, we have fallen behind from race to race compared to the cars around us. So it’s nice to recover a bit.

We just feel like we are six or seven races behind most teams. They’ve already done their upgrades. Now we’re finally getting ours done. So we started the season a little bit more where we are now.”
