Welcome to the live blog of Day 8 of the 2024 WBSC U-15 Baseball World Championship. It’s the final Super Round day in Barranquilla and all six teams are still competing for a World Championship medal. Only Japan and Puerto Rico have secured a spot in the medal games, while Nicaragua, Chinese Taipei, Colombia and Mexico are battling for the other two available spots.

Only four teams remain in the race for a place in the World Cup final: Japan (3-1), Puerto Rico (3-1), Nicaragua (2-2) and Chinese Taipei (2-2). Colombia and Mexico, both of whom have a 1-3 record, are only looking to advance to the bronze medal match. Host Colombia, along with Nicaragua and Puerto Rico, are looking to make it to the podium for the first time at a WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup.

Schedule & Results

Today’s schedule in Barranquilla includes Mexico vs. Puerto Rico at 10:30 a.m., Nicaragua vs. Japan at 3:00 p.m. and Colombia vs. Chinese Taipei at 7:00 p.m.

In the placement round in Cartagena, Italy will face Venezuela at 10:30 a.m.; South Africa and the Dominican Republic will play at 3:00 p.m.; Guam and the Netherlands will finish their participation in the tournament at 7:00 p.m. The Dominican Republic leads the table with 4:0, followed by Italy and Venezuela (3:1); the Netherlands and South Africa (1:3); and Guam (0:4).

In the second match of the day, Nicaragua and Japan will play their final super round match at 3:00 p.m. Japan secured a place in tomorrow’s medal match with a 3-1 lead. A win today would secure them a place in the final, their second in history if the U-15 age group is included. Nicaragua will be aiming to win its first medal at the event. Play will begin at 3:00 p.m.

In the final match of the day, Colombia and Chinese Taipei will face off in Barranquilla to determine the teams qualified for the medal games. Hosts Colombia will need to win this match to keep their hopes of a medal alive at this World Cup. A win for Chinese Taipei would secure their place in tomorrow’s medal games and have a chance to play in the bronze medal match at 2pm or the World Cup final at 7pm. Colombia is seeking its first medal, while Chinese Taipei has one World Cup title and 10 medals in total (counting the previous Youth Baseball World Cups).

In the Placement Round in Cartagena de Indias, Venezuela defeated Italy 10-9 in nine innings for its second victory in the Placement Round. Venezuela overcame a four-run deficit in the fourth inning, tied the game, sent the game into overtime and won in the ninth inning on a ten-pitch walk by Camilo Gutierrez with the bases full.

In the top of the eighth inning, Italy scored three runs to regain the lead. However, Venezuela tied the game again with a three-run rally of their own. Italy failed to score in the ninth at-bat and Venezuela secured the win.

With this result, Venezuela secured eighth place in the final standings and concluded the placement round with a score of 4:1. Italy finished ninth with a score of 3:2.

Mexico 2 – 5 Puerto Rico – Game by Game

15:00 – We’re playing again. End of the fourth inning and one out, Mexico has changed pitchers. Alexander Ibarra gets the ball. This is his third appearance in the tournament, in his first two games he has thrown a total of 97 pitches. He relies primarily on his fastball, which he uses 75% of the time and averages 82.9 MPH, over 85 MPH.

14:30 – Both teams begin stretching and warming up again while the grounds personnel work on the field.

13:58 – We aim to resume at 3:00 p.m. local time.

13:41 – The rain has stopped and the tarpaulin is being removed from the field. The time of resumption has not yet been determined.

13:15 – No news from Barranquilla. It’s still raining. Teams in the clubhouse.

Lower third – With one out in the second half of the third inning, the game was postponed due to heavy rain in Barranquilla (at 11:21 a.m. local time).

Below 2. – Puerto Rico continues to score. They extended their lead to 5-2 in the second inning with a crucial two-out, two-run double from the left outfield boundary by Jean Rosa.

Top2 – It’s a one-run ballgame. Mexico scores a point with an RBI single from Roberto Delgadillo that brings home Alex Tolosa, and the score is now 3-2. The inning ended with a nice point at the hole by Puerto Rico shortstop Bradley Rodriguez.

Below 1. – Puerto Rico responded with a three-run rally to take the lead on the scoreboard. Two walks and a fielding error loaded the bases for the Caribbean team, and a hit by pitch tied the score. Arnaldo Rodriguez and Valentin Carrasquillo each made it 3-1 with an RBI single. The second out of the inning was a perfect throw by Mexico center fielder Joel Vargas, who threw out Jean Rosa at home.

Top1 – Mexico takes a one-run lead in the first at-bat. Joel Vargas walked, advanced on a sac bunt and scored on a two-out RBI single by Alexander Huerta. It was Huerta’s second RBI of the tournament.

preview – The first match of the day will see Mexico and Puerto Rico meet at Edgar Renteria Stadium. A win will secure Puerto Rico a place in tomorrow’s final and its first medal in this age group. Mexico, on the other hand, needs a win today and a combination of results to secure a place in the bronze medal match. Mexico has only won one bronze medal in the history of the competition, in 2009 in Taiwan, when the tournament was still an under-16 event. Mexico and Puerto Rico have never competed in this event before. First pitch is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
