Shakib Al Hasan in trouble as BCB sends legal notice to exclude veteran from national team

Former Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan’s place in the national team is in jeopardy. The all-rounder is facing murder charges and recently Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Sajib Mahmood Alam, on behalf of another SC lawyer Md Rafinur Rahman, served a legal notice to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) asking the player to be present in the country during the investigation.

As per International Cricket Council (ICC) rules, a national cricket team cannot field a player who is facing criminal proceedings. However, that has not stopped Shakib from playing in the ongoing two-match Test series against Pakistan. He has currently been asked to return to Bangladesh, but it is unclear whether that will actually happen.

After the ouster of Sheikh Hasina’s government, BCB has not been functioning properly. They are slowly getting back on their feet and this may delay Shakib’s arrival in Bangladesh. According to The Daily Star, no time limit has been set for Shakib to return, which means the all-rounder can play in the series against Pakistan.

It is expected that he will also come to India after the Pakistan leg is over. The 37-year-old has made himself available for selection, as confirmed by Nazmul Abedeen Fahim, one of the directors of the BCB. However, the ongoing criminal proceedings against the cricketer could put the matter in jeopardy.

What is particularly noteworthy is that on August 22, a case was filed against him for the murder of textile worker Md Rubel. In addition to him and former Prime Minister Hasina, 156 named and 400-500 unidentified persons were also accused in the case.

Shakib has not commented on the matter as he is currently playing international cricket. In the first Test against Pakistan, Shakib conceded 100 runs in 27 overs and took the wicket of Agha Salman. He managed just 15 runs with the bat. The match is heading for a draw unless something dramatic happens on the final day.
