Report: Big 12 considering possibly adding UConn to conference

STILLWATER – Could we see another expansion of the Big 12 in the near future? According to a report from Brett McMurphy, it seems quite possible. McMurphy says the Big 12 is considering adding UConn to the league. Football is not expected to join until 2031, and all other sports may join as early as 2026.

According to McMurphy, UConn officials met with the Big 12 in Dallas last week and showed the conference how and that they are willing to invest more in football.

As things stand now, UConn is a major contributor in both men’s and women’s basketball, as the women have long been a top division and the men have won two consecutive national championships.

Being from New York, it would make perfect sense for Yormark to want to add great Big East basketball programs to an already crowded Big 12 conference.

Sources have told Pokes Report that the television networks would have to be willing to increase conference payouts so that each school would earn more if UConn was added to the conference, not just enough to cover UConn’s share. Current member schools certainly wouldn’t be willing to take less money to add a school, especially one that doesn’t do anything in terms of football.

Now, UConn is less than an hour away from ESPN headquarters, so it’s entirely possible that ESPN places a higher value on the Huskies than people realize.

It is currently unclear how Dr. Shrum and Oklahoma State feel about opening a new school so soon after two years of massive expansion with eight new schools, but our sources tell us it will come down to a conference-wide vote by the president.
