NBA legend presents Warriors’ dream transfer scenario as last hope for championship

With Paul George and Lauri Markkanen remaining undrafted this offseason, the Golden State Warriors’ next big transfer target is not currently all that obvious.

The Warriors have maintained their flexibility to be active in the transfer market and are now hoping that another All-Star caliber player will become available in the next 12 months.

If you asked Golden State who their dream transfer target would be, they would probably answer Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo. That’s exactly what NBA legend Paul Pierce suggested, as the 10-time All-Star believes that signing Antetokounmpo is the only way the Warriors can get back into serious contention.

“I mean, the only way I see Golden State getting back to where they need to be is if they find a way to get Giannis there.” Pierce said this recently on the Ticket & The Truth Show.

This is far from the first time that Antetokounmpo has been discussed as a transfer target for Golden State. The two-time MVP’s dominant, basket-smashing style of play is often seen as a perfect complement to the greatest shooter of all time, Stephen Curry.

There was a lot of speculation that Curry was trying to recruit Antetokounmpo after a game between the Warriors and the Bucks in 2020, while The Athletic called the 29-year-old Golden State’s dream signing after failing to sign LeBron James in February.

Antetokounmpo has four more years left on his contract, making a move to the Warriors extremely unlikely unless he demands a trade outright, a possibility that depends on whether Milwaukee can return to contention next season after being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs each of the past two seasons.

The 8-time All-Star was the fourth-best player last season after averaging 30.4 points, 11.5 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game, but injury has limited him to the playoffs only three times in the last two years.

The Warriors and 28 other teams are hoping the Bucks will continue to make it difficult for Antetokounmpo to leave, but given his loyalty to the franchise so far, that should be considered a pipe dream.
