HBO’s “Hard Knocks” is not for die-hard Chicago Bears fans

After the Chicago Bears were previously hesitant to appear on HBO’s “Hard Knocks,” many Bears fans are now experiencing the program for the first time, as the Bears are featured in this year’s training camp episode of the show.

There’s no doubt that the show definitely gave us some cool moments in the first two episodes. Whether it was legendary college football head coach Nick Saban not only showing up at camp but also chatting with Matt Eberflus or Theo Benedet becoming an overnight sensation, there was no shortage of moments that can entertain the casual viewer.

Case in point: One of the biggest storylines of the first two episodes was the apparent rise of undrafted rookie quarterback Austin Reed to the Bears’ 53-man roster. Reed’s parents were highlighted in every episode, and who doesn’t like to see that full-circle moment when parents watch their son reach the professional level? But here’s the thing: There is no scenario in which Reed makes the 53-man roster.

That’s a major reason why the show isn’t for diehard Bears fans. Bears fans not only know the ins and outs of the Bears roster, but they also devour content on a daily basis. That means they’re generally aware of when the team is spouting nonsense as opposed to what’s actually being discussed locally among local reporters and sports radio stations.

There’s no reason to be overly upset about how watered down the Bears made each episode, because there are still reasons to watch the series. For example, seeing how Caleb Williams interacts with his teammates like Rome Odunze helps you understand how quickly Williams embraces his role as the team’s leader. But if you’re watching the series to learn more about what’s going on with the Bears, Hard Knocks isn’t the platform.
