Instagram introduces MySpace-style option to add music to profile

For those not old enough to remember, MySpace was a trip. In the early days of social media, the online space where everyone was friends with Tom offered a ton of weird features to customize your profile, like letting you choose which friends you liked the most and adding glitchy banners and graphics that took forever to load.

One of the coolest ideas, however, was the ability to play a song on your profile, which would make anyone who visited your profile frantically reach for the volume knob. Sure, MySpace lost popularity when Facebook became the new standard, but somehow it inexplicably still exists today. I imagine there’s one of those signs in this office that says, “It’s been ___ days since a coworker openly cried at their desk.” It’s always set to zero.

Well, that music feature is now back on popular social media site Instagram. Since yesterday, you can add a 30-second clip of any song from the library to your page. You already had the option to add songs to individual posts, and now you can just have a song play on your regular profile. Instagram made the announcement yesterday on its own Threads page.

“We’re excited to announce that you can now add a song to your profile, giving you more ways to express yourself through music. Your profile song selection will remain on your profile until you swap the song.”

You can click the “Edit Profile” button on your profile and add a song. Now when someone visits your profile, they can see how badass you are when Metallica’s “Fuel” plays over pictures of your camping trip in Maine. Or they can see how depressed you are when This Mortal Coil’s “Song of the Siren” plays over pictures of you stuffing yourself with a KFC Famous Bowl. If anyone understands what this is referring to, I would be amazed.
