“She loved life”: Daughter of a British billionaire dies in yacht accident in Sicily

Hannah Lynch’s friends had only kind words for their friend.

British business tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch died on Monday when their luxury yacht Bayesian sank during a storm off the coast of Sicily. On Friday, search divers recovered the seventh and final body from the sunken superyacht, the Washington Post reported.

Cosimo Nicastro, a spokesman for the Italian Coast Guard, confirmed the victim’s identity as Hannah. “I can confirm to you, the last victim in the hull has been found,” he said. Mike’s trial lawyer Christopher Morvillo, his witness Jonathan Bloomer and three other people also died in the tragedy.

Hannah Lynch’s sister Esme said Hannah would often burst into my bedroom and lie down with me, adding that no matter what, she showed me boundless love. “She was endlessly caring, passionately mad, unintentionally funny and to me the most amazing, supportive and cheerful sister and best friend,” she said.

She has even more love to give endlessly to her friends and passion to put into her incredible studies and goals, Esme told The Guardian. “She is my little angel, my star.”

On behalf of the Lynch family, a spokesman said they were devastated and in shock and were being comforted and supported by family and friends. “Their thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy. They would like to sincerely thank the Italian Coast Guard, the emergency services and everyone who helped with the rescue. Their only request now is that their privacy is respected at this time of unspeakable grief,” the statement continued.

Jon Mitropoulos-Monk, Hannah Lynch’s English teacher at Latymer Upper School in west London, had high praise for his student. He said he had taught Hannah for four years and would remember her for what she taught him: “kindness, compassion and commitment”.

She said she had never taught anyone who “combined outstanding intellectual ability with warmth and enthusiasm” like Hannah. She lit up the classroom with her energy and enthusiasm for learning, the teacher said of the 18-year-old.

She called the 18-year-old “one of the best English students in the country,” telling the daily English: “By 16, she had read Joyce, Faulkner and Nabokov… She loved literature, learning and life. She was so excited to study English at Oxford, a goal she had worked so hard towards.”

Once she took her seat, she sought out each member of Latymer’s sixth form English department to thank and hug them individually, the teacher added.

Hannah Lynch’s friends had nothing but kind words for their friend. Hannah’s love for everything she held dear was passionate and pure, Katya Lewis said, adding that her friend had a warm and beautiful soul.

“When I think of Hannah, I think of poetry, sunshine and her beautiful eyes,” said Hannah’s classmate Gracie Lea. “She was easy to love: sincere, devoted, extremely intelligent and genuinely kind. I will always remember her smile.”

Shortly after the Bayesian sank, fifteen people were rescued, including Angela Bacares, Hannah Lynch’s mother. During the first search, Recaldo Thomas, the yacht pilot, was found dead.
