Google Wallet now supports the ID of the fifth state: California

In October, Google Wallet for Android increased the number of supported state IDs to four, and the fifth – California – is now being introduced.

If you open Google Wallet, tap “Add to Wallet,” then tap “ID,” you’ll see California as the fifth option, joining Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, and Maryland, which were the first to roll out support in December 2022. Previously, California offered a CA DMV Wallet app with no integration.

In the card design, “California mDL” is followed by your first name, “USA” appears in the upper right corner, and the DMV logo appears in the lower left. Finally, there are some poppies with a sprawling field and a road in the background.

The setup process involves taking photos of the front and back of your ID, as well as a short (selfie) video of your face for verification, which is sent to the CA DMV. It will then take a few minutes to verify and you will receive a notification when it is available. You will also receive an email confirmation from the DMV.

  • First, tap the reader or scan your QR code: Your personal information is not shared yet. Check your phone to see what information you want to share.
  • Next, check what information is shared: Make sure you can safely provide the requested information
  • You don’t have to give your phone to anyone: Your ID is transmitted securely via Bluetooth, so make sure the feature is turned on.
  • Finally, confirm that you are the one sharing your information: For added security, you can use your face, fingerprint, password or PIN to confirm that it is your ID

Under “Details” next to “View Code” you can enable an “Activity History” while under “Driver’s License Information” you can see your driver’s license number, expiration date, address and more.

“Driver’s License | California” will appear under your card carousel. It will appear at the top of the main Google Wallet list and other IDs cannot be placed above it.

IDs can be read via NFC or by scanning the QR code, and the TSA accepts them at some airports, including select terminals at LAX, SFO and SJC. You still need to carry your ID with you for now, as having the ID on your phone “does not replace the requirement to carry a physical card.”

In California, mobile driver’s licenses and ID cards are part of a pilot program with a maximum enrollment of 1.5 million, so you may want to add your card sooner rather than later.

Your phone must be Android 8+ and have a screen lock. Bluetooth and Nearby Devices must be enabled. The State ID can be deleted at any time from Google Wallet or remotely at myaccount.google.com. As a private pass, it is not synced to the cloud and is only available on one device.

  1. Tap “Personal information”.
  2. Scroll to “Digital ID”.
  3. Tap Manage Digital ID.
  4. Tap Delete next to the ID or license you want to remove.
  5. Confirm that you want to delete your ID from your device and your Google Account.
