NASCAR Cup Series playoff format

The NASCAR Cup Series playoffs are held in four rounds – Round of 16, Round of 12, Round of 8 and Championship 4.

At each round, four drivers are eliminated based on the lowest total points. Only four of those will compete in the championship race. As in the regular season, drivers are awarded playoff points based on their finishes. Any playoff driver who wins a race in the postseason automatically advances.

Unlike the usual playoffs, non-playoff drivers can also compete in every round. They can collect points during the races and thus take crucial positions away from the playoff drivers.

Points are reset at the start of each round. Drivers will have 2,000 points at the start of the Round of 16, in addition to the playoff points earned from stage and race wins. Points will increase each round, to 3,000 for the Round of 12 and 4,000 for the Round of 8. However, in Championship 4, points are not reset and results are based on the final standings, so the driver who wins the race in Phoenix will be crowned the Cup Series champion.
