My sister will never be the same again: Family heartbroken after 19-year-old girl left in intensive care after being beaten so badly in ‘diabolical’ attack she flies through the air

The family of a teenager who ended up in intensive care after being hit so hard she was sent flying have revealed she may never be the same again after suffering a brain haemorrhage.

Poppy Owen, 19, was enjoying a nice night out with friends in Basildon, Essex, when she was “thrown through the air” and knocked unconscious by a man, according to her sister.

Essex Police confirmed the arrest of a man who has since been released on bail until November.

Poppy’s older sister Bobbie-Jo Owen, 23, called the attack “diabolical” and said: “The state she has been left in is appalling. We don’t know how this might affect her future, it’s just disgraceful.”

She added that her sister stopped breathing after the attack and was resuscitated by her colleagues who were also outside The Loft in Southernhay.

Since the incident in the early hours of August 11, Poppy has been receiving daily specialist treatment, including physical and speech therapy.

The teenager cannot remember the details of the attack and was unable to speak at all the next day, Bobbie-Jo said.

She explained The Echo: “Poppy is in intensive care and undergoes regular CT scans to monitor the development of her brain. She has a brain haemorrhage and severe brain contusions.”

“The way she speaks suggests that she is mixing up her words.”

Friends and family wished Bobbie-Jo their best wishes on social media after she shared her sister’s story.

Leah Eden wrote on Facebook: “I am so sorry this happened to you. I am thinking of you all and sending you all our love. I pray that she recovers quickly and suffers no permanent damage.”

One of Poppy’s colleagues, Jennifer Dourado, commented: “I am deeply saddened by this news. Poppy is so loved at work and I wish her a safe and speedy recovery.”

The arrested 22-year-old is free on bail, but police confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
