Dulwich Hamlet FC target of racist and right-wing extremist graffiti

Police have released an image of a man they are looking for after he repeatedly defaced “disgusting”, racist and anti-immigrant graffiti near the entrance to a south London football club.

Between July 21 and August 9, “extremely offensive” right-wing remarks and a swastika symbol were scrawled on a sign outside Dulwich Hamlet FC’s stadium on Champion Hill, the Met said.

The graffiti appeared on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 05:00 and 06:00 (BST) over a three-week period.

Police believe the man is “most likely a local” and are urging anyone who recognises him to “contact us immediately”.

On 9 August, Dulwich Hamlet FC staff saw a man apparently writing something on the sign and took a photograph of him, which they showed to the police.

However, the suspect has not yet been identified.

The Isthmian League Premier Division said it had cleaned the graffiti on the sign several times but now needed to replace it and install video surveillance.

The club understands that the comments originally arose due to recent clearing and weeding work in an area surrounding the stadium.

“However, we were shocked to see the graffiti escalate from attacks against us for cutting back vegetation to disgusting, extreme racism and anti-immigration comments,” said Ben Clasper, chairman of Dulwich Hamlet FC Club.

“We hope this information and photo will help someone in our community identify him so police can take further action.”

Investigating officer PC Nicolas Wilson, based in East Dulwich, said: “I will not repeat the things the man has written but they are far-right and anti-immigration in nature. They are highly offensive and distressing to local residents and the club’s staff and players.”

PC Wilson described Dulwich Hamlet FC as a “pillar of the community” and said the attacks on his property were “unacceptable”.

“The man is most likely here and I am sure someone knows who he is. If that is the case, please contact us immediately,” he added.
