School bus driver dies after ‘medical incident’ in crash involving empty bus in Sarasota Publix parking lot

According to authorities, a school bus without children on board crashed in Sarasota on Friday morning.

The Florida Highway Patrol says the bus driver, a 59-year-old North Port man, crashed his bus shortly after 9 a.m. in the Publix parking lot at the intersection of Blackburn Road and U.S. 41.

Police say it had a “medical incident” and went off the road and into the parking lot. According to FHP, the bus struck three vehicles before coming to a stop.

There were no children on board the bus at the time of the accident. However, a 62-year-old man from North Port was in a pickup truck that the bus collided with. The man was not injured, officials said.

The bus driver was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where he died, according to FHP.

The Florida Highway Patrol’s Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating the incident.
