NMU and city officials urge new students and the public to make water safety a top priority

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – Summer temperatures are expected this weekend, just as Northern Michigan University students arrive, meaning the beaches will likely be busy.

While many flock to Lake Superior, NMU spokesman Derek Hall wants to prevent students new to the area from getting into dangerous situations.

“There are great spots in the lake, but then there are spots with lots of warning signs: ‘Do not swim here.’ We ask our students to heed those signs, be careful, go with a friend and let others know where you are. Those are very important things,” Hall said.

Marquette Fire Chief Jeff Fossitt said his goal is not to see an increase in emergency calls this time of year.

He says a safe weekend starts with following all safety rules.

“Just read the signage and listen to the lifeguards. We have added more signs in the picnic rocks area indicating that swimming is prohibited. Be aware of health issues such as dehydration and wear sunscreen,” Fossitt said. “We ask that you stay in the swimming areas if possible, especially with children, and do not swim past the buoys.”

Fossitt says McCarty’s Cove is the only beach where lifeguards will be on duty this weekend from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

He says swimmers should pay attention to beach flags.

“So green is usually quite normal, and then there is a yellow flag which means caution is advised, and then there is a single and double red flag which means the water is dangerous,” Fossitt said.

The Marquette Fire Department and NMU all point out that drinking alcohol is prohibited on all city beaches.
