12-year-old girl killed by gunfire in her home – police search for shooter

DAYTON, Ohio (WKEF) – A 12-year-old girl died when gunshots entered her home while she was sleeping early Friday, August 23.

According to Dayton Police Major Brian Johns, it happened around 1 a.m. in the 30 block of Fairview Avenue.

Johns said the girl was found dead on the floor by her 11-year-old sister.

The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office identified the shooting victim as 12-year-old Isabellas Amor-Carlos of Dayton.

Neighboring houses were also shot at several times. According to Johns, the shooter fired shots at the houses opposite.

“We recovered over 30 rifle cartridges at the scene and it appears that at least two shooters were responsible for the shooting during the shooting,” Johns said.

Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact Miami Valley Crime Stoppers, either (937) 222-7867 or https://www.miamivalleycrimestoppers.com/

“It is critical that we solve this crime. A 12-year-old girl was sleeping in her bed when she was murdered in front of her family,” Johns said.

Johns says the area where the incident occurred is quite busy and hopes people who live or do business there will review their surveillance or Ring camera videos, which could be of use to police.

Johns said it has been a busy year for the Dayton Police Department.

“This is actually the eighth juvenile murdered in the city of Dayton this year,” Johns said. “We also have two other victims who are 18 years old, so we have a problem with juvenile victims. Every victim is a problem for us. I’ve been here a long time, but to have eight juvenile victims so far is something I’ve never seen in my time here.”

John says there is no evidence that the house where the young girl lived was the target of a crime.

No one else reported injuries in the shooting.

Dayton Public Schools Superintendent Dr. David Lawrence confirmed the girl was a student at Charity Adams Earley Girls Academy. The school system released a statement Friday afternoon.
