Tesla (TSLA) has announced another recall for its Cybertruck – the fourth since its launch late last year. But what’s the real headline of the announcement? The recall notice details how many Cybertrucks are actually in circulation.

In a letter from NHTSA on Monday, June 24, Tesla confirmed it would issue a recall for a defective windshield wiper. The Cybertruck’s single large windshield wiper (the largest ever used on a passenger vehicle) can fail due to “excessive electrical current.” A separate, simultaneous recall was also issued for the panel in the truck’s bed.

Tesla also announced the number of vehicles affected by the recall – 11,688 trucks – which is equal to the number of Cybertrucks sold, as it includes vehicles in use and in transit to customers. Since Tesla doesn’t officially break down Cybertruck sales in its quarterly delivery report, it’s notable to get a glimpse into early Cybertruck sales.

A look at the numbers also reveals the estimated monthly delivery numbers. Tesla began small-scale production of the Cybertruck at Giga Austin in late November last year, and a previous recall notice from Tesla revealed that 1,163 vehicles were delivered in December. That leaves about 10,525 vehicles that Tesla will produce in 2024, giving Tesla an average monthly delivery rate of 1,754 Cybertrucks with five days left in June.

Extrapolated to the end of 2024, this means that Tesla could deliver around 23,500 Cybertrucks this year. However, at the annual shareholder meeting two weeks ago, CEO Elon Musk announced that Tesla had reached a production record of 1,300 Cybertrucks per week and had an ambitious goal of 2,500 vehicles per week by the end of 2024.

Producing 2,500 Cybertrucks per week theoretically equates to 125,000 vehicles per year (assuming two weeks of factory downtime), or half of what Tesla considers to be total production of 250,000 units.

The bigger question here is whether there are enough buyers for 125,000 vehicles produced per year, let alone 250,000 vehicles. Musk claimed last year that demand for Cybertrucks was “extraordinary” and also revealed at the shareholder meeting that cheaper, non-Foundation Series Cybertrucks are on the way. The Foundation Series starts at $102,235, but cheaper trims like the Cyberbeast ($96,390) and All-Wheel Drive ($76,390) could be on the way.

Overall demand for electric vehicles – even Tesla electric vehicles like the popular Model Y SUV – is bleak. Musk confirmed at the shareholder meeting that demand and sales will continue to decline somewhat in the short term as the industry goes through a transition phase.

“It’s a tough place out there,” Musk said, referring to the electric vehicle market, adding that competitors have also cut back on investment in and production of electric vehicles.

Tesla is expected to announce total delivery numbers for the second quarter early next week. The Street expects around 441,000 deliveries for the quarter, according to Bloomberg consensus, which would be more than the 386,800 in the first quarter but less than the 466,100 deliveries a year ago.
