Big 12 in talks to add UConn in possible expansion

The Big 12 could have another team in the conference in the near future.

On Friday, reports from The Athletic surfaced that UConn joining the Big 12 was a legitimate possibility. Commissioner Brett Yormark has pushed for the conference to accept UConn in the past, but members have resisted. The issue will come up again for debate at the conference meeting next week, however.

Before the Big 12 added its newest group of schools from the Pac-12, Yormark had been in talks with UConn about the school’s potential move. In order for the conference to expand, current members would need to approve the move by a two-thirds vote, as 12 of 16 teams must want to add UConn. While current conference officials are meeting next week, UConn already met with the conference last week in Dallas, according to Ross Dellenger.

However, UConn football would not move to the conference at the same time as other sports. The Huskies football program would likely join in 2031, as it has been one of the worst in the FBS in recent years, winning just 30 games in the last 10 seasons.

Of course, the move to the Big 12 would be a basketball-focused acquisition. Dan Hurley has led the men’s team to the national championship each of the past two seasons and also won the Big East last season. If the Huskies join the Big 12 in 2026, the conference would have a chance to enter this season with the last six national champions, considering Baylor and Kansas won in 2021 and 2022.

Meanwhile, UConn’s women’s team has been a force to be reckoned with, winning 11 of the last 30 national championships. Geno Auriemma’s team last won it all in 2016, when his team won its fourth straight title.

The Big 12 is already one of the best conferences in college basketball and has the chance to deliver one of the greatest successes in basketball in this era of conference realignment.
