After six people were injured by an air rifle shot in Sheffield, police have arrested five people, including four underage teenagers.

The incident on Richmond Park Avenue in east Sheffield occurred at 2.23pm on Wednesday.

Five children between the ages of seven and 15 and a 62-year-old woman were injured in the shooting. Three of the children had to be taken to hospital to have shotgun pellets removed from their bodies.

Local police arrested five people, a 15-year-old girl, two boys aged 15 and 16 and two 18-year-old men, on suspicion of possession of firearms and grievous bodily harm.

All five were released on bail pending further investigations.

The shooting came just months after a 17-year-old was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a horror attack at a Sheffield school that left three people injured.

Police were called to Birley Community College after reports that a child had been injured by a sharp object.

The teenager received medical treatment after the attack and two other adults were also found to have injuries.

All three were treated on site for minor injuries.

The 17-year-old suspect was arrested and taken into police custody.

Following the incident, the community college was closed.

Birley Academy posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Following an incident at school, we have imposed a precautionary lockdown.”

“This decision was not taken lightly, but the safety of students and staff is our top priority. All students and staff are safe. We are working closely with police and will update you shortly.”

An email from headteacher Vicky Hall to parents said: “There has been an incident at school.”

“I would like to assure you that all staff and students are safe and well. Emergency services were immediately on site and are on duty.”

“Please do not come to school at this time.”
