Watch: Man on e-scooter tries to weave through traffic on Burnaby highway

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) of Burnaby described it as “extremely dangerous and illegal” to ride a scooter on Highway 1.

A driver who spotted a man on an electric scooter in the fast lane of a highway in Burnaby immediately called 911 on Wednesday and then posted a video of the incident online.

Tim, who did not give his last name, said the dashcam footage was taken at 7:54 p.m. on Wednesday, August 21.

The scooter is seen traveling eastbound in the leftmost lane of Highway 1, next to the Grand Villa Casino, with cars passing by on both sides.

Towards the end of the video, it moves towards the right lanes.

Tim said the scooter rider likely accidentally entered the highway from the Grandview Highway HOV on-ramp and then attempted to exit via the Willingdon off-ramp.

“Whether he made it safely is uncertain as I continued on my way out of sight,” Tim said in an email to the NOW.

When asked what he thought when he saw the scooter, he replied, “Vancouver things.”

Then he called 911.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) of Burnaby confirmed that they received a report of a man traveling eastbound on Highway 1 on a scooter around 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

“Police patrolled the area but the scooter could not be found,” the department said in an email.

Spokesman Cpl. Mike Kalanj described the incident as “extremely dangerous and illegal.”

“It is very fortunate that this did not end tragically,” he said.

Kalanj urged anyone who witnesses such an incident to call the police immediately.
