A handicapped waterskiing event in Burlington gave people of all skill levels the opportunity to get out on the water on Friday.

Over 40 people, many of whom had never water skied before, learned the basics at Browns Lake.

It’s often exciting to be on the water. While the boats roared, the only thing louder was the cheering on the dock.

“I love water skiing,” said Shyanne Buss, who tried it for the first time Friday. “It was fast.”

Rick Legois organized the event in honor of his late daughter Lynzay, who was an avid water skier and competed alongside her father in the Browns Lake Aquaducks.

“My daughter isn’t here, but these guys are,” he said. “It gives us a reason to take our boat to the lake.”

Lynzay died in a car accident in 2006. That same year, another teammate was injured in a diving accident.

“I dove in and it was a little too shallow,” said organizer Joey Matoska, who now uses a wheelchair. “They get you back on the water one way or another. It’s amazing.”

People with disabilities have the option of getting into a so-called “sit-ski”, where two people stand next to them behind the boat.

If you didn’t get a chance to get out on the water on Friday, there’s another opportunity on Saturday at Lakefront Park in Pewaukee, starting at 9 a.m.
