Viewers of Dance Moms: A New Era were “horrified” and “extremely disturbed” after an 11-year-old dancer performed a number based on the life and murder of JonBenét Ramsey.

Subsequently Glo Hampton– the dance teacher of Dancing mothers reboot, whose streaming service began earlier this month on Hulu– commissioned dancer Ashlan Scheide to perform a routine based on JonBenét, whom she described to Ashlan as a “glitter queen,” according to Weekly entertainment. Glo left it to Ashlan’s mother, Lisa Scheideto explain to her child that JonBenét was a “glitter beauty queen” who Also Murdered in 1990 at the age of 6; the case remains unsolved to this day.

Instead of forbidding her young daughter from participating in this disturbing dance, Lisa immediately stepped in and not only explained to her daughter what had happened to JonBenét, but also gave her time stamps on the investigation into the six-year-old’s murder.

In this scene, Ashlan makes the same face as almost everyone watching “Dance Moms: A New Era.”

Although the details of this traumatic story visibly shocked 11-year-old Ashlan, she resolved to perform the dance and declared that she would “do anything to win.”

While rehearsing the questionable performance with Glo, Ashlan was instructed to put himself in the “role” of JonBenét and apparently find some sort of relationship with the child beauty queen.

Ashlan’s appearance compared to one of JonBenét’s pageant photos…

“Remember, it’s a really sad, tragic story,” Glo tells Ashlan. “So you play this little kid who’s been put on display in all these beauty pageants, and your parents want this fame and celebrity for you, but is that what they really want?”

As promised, Ashlan later takes the competition stage in an outfit eerily reminiscent of one of the infamous JonBenét pageant photos that have circulated in the media for the past 24 years. In the end, Ashlan’s true-crime-inspired performance earned her fourth place.

However, the number also received massive criticism from fans of the show, Glo and Ashlan’s mother, with many fans calling the dance “extremely disturbing.”

Um, you think?

“I think in cases like (JonBenét) and Gypsy Rose (Blanchard), where the cases are incredibly public, several documentaries and films have been made about them… people are starting to blur the lines and forget that these are real children,” said one fan of the show on Reddit“I think a dance about JonBenét could never be truly tasteful. Simply because there is no happy ending, just an emphasis on a gruesome murder of a child. They could have easily done a beauty pageant dance without exploiting JonBenét’s murder.”

“I was disturbed. If I had been in the audience and didn’t know what was going to happen, I would have been sitting there with a huge WTF look on my face,” one viewer noted, while another pointed out some of Glo’s inappropriate comments during the episode.

“My family and I gasped when Glo (Ashlan) said that her makeup when she was fooling around looked like what JonBenét probably looked like after she was murdered. That was beyond disgusting and disturbing to me.”

Many viewers were also disturbed by the way Lisa shared JonBenét’s story with Ashlan, as well as the undeniable similarity between the two girls.

“The worst part for me was that Ashlan’s mother told her the whole story,” said one comment. “It obviously upset her. I couldn’t believe how much Ashlan looked like JonBenét.”

While viewers were obviously disturbed by Ashlan’s performance – or more specifically, the content of that performance – Ashlan revealed over the course of the episode that she was not happy with it either, albeit for a completely different reason.

“I kind of know how JonBenét felt,” Ashlan told her mother after finishing in fourth place. “I’m never good enough.”
